When Michele Guinness’s curate husband lands his first job in ‘Grimlington’, a grimy, strike-bound mining town in Yorkshire, Michele is not over the moon. The idea of being a clergyman’s wife does not appeal in the least; nor does the prospect of living in a poorly designed clergy house, standing there at a distance from all the other buildings, apparent symbol of the yawning gap between ‘the Church’ and ordinary people. But, strangely Grimlington is promised land for Michele and her family, and what they unearth there is hidden gold. Grimlington is ‘everywhere and anywhere’, and Promised Land is the vivid, humorous story of ordinary people sharing their lives & learning from each other and from God. Some incidents have formed the basis of ‘Pause For Thought’ on the Derek Jameson programme on Radio Two.
