Description

How is it possible that a black Pentecostal could find himself at the heart of British evangelicalism? Joel Edwards tells the story of his own pilgrimage from the close-knit black church community in Britain to his role as General Director of the Evangelical Alliance, where he holds in tension a variety of different viewpoints. As a young Christian Joel belonged to a church which enjoyed powerful teaching and exuberant Pentecostal worship but where jewellery was frowned on. Joel describes how he was plunged into the melting-pot of London Bible College where he encountered students from very different cultural and church backgrounds. He compares his experience with the challenge to find unity in diversity which faces evangelicals today. He urges both greater understanding & the importance of putting private prejudices aside in favour of faithfulness to non-negotiable truths. Joel Edwards is General Director of the Evangelical Alliance. He is also an executive member of the New Testament Church of God & associate pastor of one of their churches in Mile End, London.
